Roman the Painter (formerly Robert R. Norman)

Roman the Painter, formerly known as Robert R. Norman, is an accomplished artist based in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, celebrated for his mastery of both impressionistic oil painting and pen-and-ink illustration. Originally from Charlevoix, Michigan, Roman draws deep inspiration from the natural beauty of Northern Michigan and the Ozark Mountains, where he has lived and worked since 1994.

Roman’s journey as an artist began with printed clothing designs and evolved into Roadside Rustics, a unique venture in creating rustic log furniture. As the innovator behind the sassafras log furniture genre, Roman's use of native materials brought an unprecedented vibrancy to rustic design, setting his work apart as both functional and artistic.

In the years that followed, Roman shifted his focus back to fine art, producing ink and watercolor illustrations that have earned him accolades, including being named Artist of the Year in Eureka Springs. His work has been featured at Studio 34, a prominent gallery in downtown Eureka Springs.

Now, as Roman the Painter, he has embraced a bold new artistic chapter, focusing on vibrant impressionistic oil paintings that capture the beauty and essence of nature. His paintings often depict birch forests, wildflowers, and vivid sunsets, rendered in a style that bridges the emotional energy of Van Gogh with his own contemporary flair.

Roman’s mission is to become one of the finest impressionistic oil painters, bringing his vision of nature to collectors and audiences nationwide. With plans to travel to art fairs across the country, particularly focusing on Northern Michigan during the summer, Roman seeks to connect with new collectors and share the stories of his work.

While his oil painting remains at the forefront, Roman continues to create pen-and-ink works, maintaining the intricate style that has been a hallmark of his career. Whether through oil or ink, Roman’s art celebrates the beauty of the natural world, evoking a sense of wonder and connection.
